FETAL MEDICINE

Fetal 2D Echo (Fetal Echocardiography) in Kandivali West

A fetal echocardiogram is a detailed ultrasound of your baby heart, performed while the baby is still in the womb. It examines the structure, size and function of the fetal heart in far greater detail than a routine anomaly scan. Because interpreting fetal cardiac anatomy requires specific training, this scan is performed at Ashray Healthcare by Dr. Rajul Oswal, who brings dedicated fetal medicine training and Fetal Medicine Foundation accreditation to every examination.

What the Scan Assesses

Four-Chamber View

Evaluation of size, shape and symmetry of the left and right ventricles and atria.

Valve Assessment

Visualisation of the mitral, tricuspid, aortic and pulmonary valves to identify abnormal flow or structural defects.

Great Vessel Evaluation

Examination of the aorta and pulmonary artery, including their positions and connections to the heart.

Colour Flow Doppler

Identifies abnormal blood flow patterns that indicate holes (septal defects), valve leaks or obstructions.

Rhythm Assessment

Detects fetal arrhythmias or irregular heart rates that may need monitoring or treatment.

Written Report

Findings communicated directly to your obstetrician or fetal medicine consultant as needed.

Who Should Get a Fetal Echo?

  • You have pre-existing or gestational diabetes, which increases the risk of congenital heart defects.
  • A family history of congenital heart disease exists in either parent or a sibling.
  • The routine anomaly scan raised a concern about the 4-chamber view or any cardiac structure.
  • You are carrying a baby with a chromosomal condition such as Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), where associated heart defects are common.
  • You were exposed to certain medications, infections (such as rubella) or substances in early pregnancy that may affect fetal cardiac development.

Why This Scan Requires a Specialist

Specialist Fetal Medicine Training

Dr. Oswal Fellowship in Fetal Medicine and Pediatric Sonography means this examination is led by a trained specialist, not a general sonographer.

Early Detection Changes Outcomes

Detecting congenital heart defects before delivery allows your obstetric team to plan the safest delivery setting and arrange neonatal cardiac care in advance.

Rare Capability in Kandivali

Ashray is among very few centres in Kandivali West offering this level of dedicated fetal cardiac imaging, reducing the need to travel to a tertiary centre.

What to Expect

  1. The scan is performed abdominally, typically between 20 and 24 weeks, when the fetal heart is large enough for detailed assessment. Earlier scans are possible with a transvaginal approach if clinically indicated.
  2. The examination takes longer than a routine pregnancy scan, usually 30 to 45 minutes, because the heart is examined from multiple angles.
  3. No special preparation is needed. The scan is entirely painless and safe for both mother and baby.
  4. Dr. Oswal will explain findings directly after the scan. A written report is provided the same day for your records and for your obstetrician.
